I really agree with your entire last paragraph!  Also wanted to say that I have to apologize about saying people knew about Tommy's marital situation.  I've lived in Dane County my entire life, and it was common knowledge here starting from the 1980s.  He was not discreet about his extra-marital affairs at all around here.  I really thought Thompson's disgusting behavior was more widely known.  The WI State Journal editorial board warned him in an OpEd piece years ago when he tried a run for the Presidency that his personal life would not stand the scrutiny a national race would entail.  Pigheaded as he is, he ignored them but didn't make it far in the primaries and dropped out.

Ultimately, he's a ruthless, crude, greedy hypocrite.  Having him AND Ron Johnson in the US Senate together is nightmare-inducing.

      delves into personal dirty-secrets.

On the other hand, it's so infuriating to see Republicans get a pass with extra-marital shenanigans after demagoguing their upstanding family values.

Yeah, I heard the repeated "my wife" thing in the debate too, and gagged a little.  Rumor has it that a former owner of my house was... ummm... shall we say, involved in the indiscretions.  The affairs and the boozing have not been a campaign issue -- Tammy's too principled for that -- but if you type Tommy Thompson into Google, the first autocomplete suggestion is "Tommy Thompson drunk."

      Sigh.
