  •  The diarist has some credibility issues (5+ / 0-)

    See here:

“Charley James” isn’t his real name, but that doesn’t matter. Truth, accuracy, remotely verifiable details—all out the window. The future of journalism is going to be a thrilling place.

Here’s how “Charley James”—who claims to be a US journalism veteran now based in Canada, and who apparently writes under at least three names—altered our world.

On September 5, James posted an item at his utterly unknown blog The Progressive Curmudgeon (which has existed for only 80 days) claiming that Sarah Palin had reacted to Barack Obama’s defeat of Hillary Clinton by crowing: “So Sambo beat the bitch!”

Wrote James: “This is how Republican vice-presidential nominee Sarah Palin described Barack Obama’s win over Hillary Clinton to political colleagues in a restaurant a few days after Obama locked up the Democratic Party presidential nomination.

“According to ‘Lucille’, the waitress serving her table at the time and who asked that her last name not be used, Gov. Palin was eating lunch with five or six people when the subject of the Democrats primary battle came up.

“The Governor, seemingly not caring that people at nearby tables would likely hear her, uttered the slur and then laughed loudly as her meal mates joined in appreciatively.”

So we have an anonymous waitress telling an anonymous blogger about something she claims was said at an unnamed restaurant on an unspecified date in a city James doesn’t care to identify. Solid.

    •  This is the norm in many mainstream... (0+ / 0-)

articles. So many have anonymous sources, even anonymous waitresses. Where have you been?
And many members here don't use their real names, so I don't know why that is an issue.

Even after reading Adam B's comments. More evidence of James's lack of credibility:

The biggest tell that this is a fabulist (5+ / 0-)
Look at the diarist's piece two days ago.  He claims Cong. Jesse Jackson Jr. is drawing up legislative plans on voter registration, when Jackson hasn't been seen or heard from in public in months given his illness.  It's unclear whether he'll ultimately stand for reelection next month.

        No credibility. Please HR.

Didn't the Nephew saga teach you anything at all? The very least it should teach you to be a little more cautious of non-sourced diaries.

Yes, plenty of news reports are based, in part or in whole, on anonymous sources, but no credible story in any credible publication, website or even television/cable station would run something based on just one anonymous source who supposedly gives a major national scoop/trial balloon to an obscure, ethically-challenged blogger.

I'm a reporter, and every editor I've ever had -- even the awful ones -- would have thrown me out of the newsroom if I'd turned in a story written like that.

"Charley James" and his post are indefensible. Period.

      •  Um, Bob Woodward can float an anonymous (0+ / 0-)

source. Charley NoName cannot. No one knows who he is, he's got virtually zero credibility. I wouldn't even trust an "anonymous source" story that the dog catcher was quitting from this writer.
