  •  This sets a horrid precedent (4+ / 0-)

The lies perpetrated by Romney were vast and deep, facts and history were irrelevant.  Romney created a new history tonight, and he unvieled entirely new positions on a variety of issues.  While he was at it, he compared Obama to one of his boys who repeatedly lied.  The classic Rovian inoculation:  accuse one's opponent of doing what you are doing, so if your opponent does call you out, he looks as if he's retaliating for being caught.

So what is the media talking about?  Not Romney's lies, not at all.  They speak of Romney's confidence and command of the issues, of his dominance of the debate time and topics, and of his apparent skill at explaining things.

A master politician like Bill Clinton may have shut Romney down tonight, but only by putting Romney on the defensive.  Where to begin with Obama's performance?  He was deferential, passive, muddled, and by the end of the debate was speaking of broken campaign promises.  While Romney attacked, Obama found openings to praise Romney or point out areas of agreement.  Most perplexing was Obama's failure to boomerang Romney's death panel charges, an silver platter opportunity to characterize Romney as a craven liar.

Two more debates like this, and we're in for a Romney presidency with a GOP house and senate.

there's no evidence this is changing any votes. That will have to be seen in national polls over the next two weeks before we can say that.

The GOP is a fantasy based movement. They invent everything as they go a along. Debates are an artifact of an earlier time, unfortunately, and the GOP will exploit that.

Obama is probably going to do better in the next debate, but he'll never go around beating people up as some people here seem to fantasize about.

Obama's game is going to be outside these forums. There's no choice about it, never was.

and though Bill Clinton would have done better, I don't think he would have change that fantasy vs reality dynamic much. He still wouldn't have used the word "liar".

like a petulant child & pinned him down on his numerous contradictions. maybe PBO needs to watch the news s he's familiar with Romney's numerous contradictions.
for ex, he lauded Romneycare an putting in his own plan, huh?
Why didn't Obama say ER care is not a health care plan gov, that's the most expensive type of care which adds hugely to the deficit. pivot to planned Parenthood, abortion positions and Akin, anything
Attack, attack attack. They want Obama to maintain his likability but nobody ever won playing it safe.
Obama needs to attack next time & just hold Myth's feet to the fire on his ever hanging contradictory positions.
Obama's performance tonight is the reason Dems always have problems, they refuse to be animated, passionate & hardcore but this culture loves that stuff.
No 47%, Detroit go bankrupt, housing go bankrupt, Romney penning an op-ed telling Obama 2 use Romneycare nationally. Seriously what the eff happened?
