  •  I had a fantasy that Obama was (18+ / 0-)

going to look up from all the notes he'd been taking, for his closing words, and says, "I haven't bothered rebutting all the misinformation, but during this debate I wrote down all the misstatements of fact the Romney made. I count nineteen of them. Perhaps fact-checkers will find more. My campaign will scan my hand-written notes and post online, so you can see if you agree to me about Governor Romney's lies--er, misstatements."

    •  That would've been nice (11+ / 0-)

but hard to think of when you're hearing all those lies in that moment. He can't do a Joe Wilson, and point at Romney saying, "You lie!" (or whoever that Repub Congressman was)

      •  Well, it was just a daydream! (2+ / 0-)

But I liked the idea that there was a reason he was looking down all the time and not responding aggressively (even if not in Wilsonian terms).

That said, eh. It'll change the narrative until Romney's next gaffe, but it won't change the race.

        •  He missed tons of opportunities (3+ / 0-)

          to explode Romney.

Romney even mentioned his "accountant!"  It was a hole the size of a house for Obama to bring up his Swiss bank accounts and the Cayman Islands.  He could have just said, "Yeah, maybe I should get your accountant."

And inexplicably, he didn't just swing and miss at them.  He never even took a swing.

          •  Yea, but (0+ / 0-)

remember, Obama got absolutely PILLORIED (HILLARIED?) in '08 when he said the acrimonious "You're likable enough".  The media would love (and I include the liberal media here) to have a soundbyte of Obama going tit-for-tat nasty with something like "Yeah, maybe I should get your accountant" would make us feel emotionally better but not play well to the electorate.

We are talking about a black guy in office.  The allotted margin of error ("free pass") is considerably smaller than if he were white.

            •  Disagree (0+ / 0-)

People know him now, and generally like him.  To anybody who would vote for him, he's not just "the black guy" anymore.  They would have loved seeing Wall St. Richie Rich have his nose tweaked by the President.  To make him answer for his Swiss bank accounts.  But Obama seems to genuinely have a problem confronting people like this.

After watching tonight, all you really know is that he thinks Romney is a "nice guy."

That is a huge fail in the context of what these debates mean for the election.
