  •  Nah (40+ / 0-)

Romney was more aggressive, but he also lied through his teeth with every drawn breath.

The debate was probably close to a draw, but the winner will be determined by the after-debate spin.  If the Obama campaign can pin Romney on his lies, or if conservatives are dumb enough to go nuts on some of Romney's backtracks, it'll turn out to be yet another bad night for Romney.

But yeah, I think Obama needs to be  more aggressive next time.

But this was a clear rout, spin or no spin. Romney basically cheated, and Lehrer let him get away with it, but the POTUS isn't dumb, he saw what was going on and did little about it. The ultimate perception is that Romney won and won big, and that is all that really matters in this round.

Hopefully Slink is right, the prez will recover and come back strong next time around. I'm not as optimistic, but he has demonstrated in the past, an ability to learn and adapt, let's hope he does so this time.

National TV, a primetime debate is not the time to be playing games.  Whatever may happen in the press over the next few days will be irrelevant; people tuned in tonight to watch the 2 candidates and Romney got the upper hand.  A tie would have been OK, the next debate is apparently foreign policy and that isn't exactly the dominant theme of this election so this was a huge opportunity lost.  The President seemed to not have considered that Romney would lie through his teeth.  I don't get it.
On top of that the President has a responsibility to the downballot races and he pretty much tossed a whole bunch of those under the bus.

Romney actually said or any back-flips.   They just want to win at this point.

The time to point out the lies was during the debate not afterwards.

This was a disaster.   I don't know what effect it will have on the numbers since there are few undecideds and I doubt  this will make anyone switch their choice but we'll see over the next week.

6 is the effect that Romney had on the radical right base.  If they see him as a leopard who is trying to change its spots, as going against all the tenuous hold on the loyalty and votes of the radicalize tea party base, this may factor into a decision by those zealots to stay home and say that Romney is really only a RINO.  This debate performance may have pushed a fair number in that crowd to vote for Johnson or to stay home.  They can also tell when Mitt Romney is lying, and their reactions may be very viceral, and they may express a great feeling of betrayal from Romney.

Next week, I don't expect Vice President Biden to be passive or unafraid to call out Ryan and Romney, and he in fact may be the truth squad for the president.  I certainly hope that is so.

      •  but... if Romney gets big donors behind him again (0+ / 0-)

and he tanks again, as he should, it could tip the balance of the senate for us. Don't despair. Keep clearing the air. The radial right won't save him, 'cause he ain't KKChristian.

    •  Obama has to stop trusting Republicans (5+ / 0-)

He has to get over the idea that they deserve respect. They don't.

      •  We have to accept the fact that Obama despises (0+ / 0-)

direct negotiation and confrontation.  It is the reason that he does not have strong Congressional ties, he does not like the game(and it is a game).  Obama likes policy but not the messy business of the politics.  Romney is not good at and Obama does not like it.
