...seriously, how much difference is there between the "South alone" spread and the "country" spread?

    (18, 35, 47, 0) compared to (17, 39, 44, 1)...

    •  I agree that it is not a large difference... (2+ / 0-)

...but to me the most reasonable explanation is that the data from the other parts of the country is not all that different (in terms of means) than the South.   But the data from the other parts of the country have more variation (hence the larger margins-of-error) than the South.

I'll put that another way:  what the data suggests to me is that respondents from the South were more uniform in how they responded to the poll than were respondents in other parts of the country.   Which makes sense, given that the South is a Romney stronghold.

      Hope that helps.

      •  nah, there's a whole buncha other possibilities... (1+ / 0-)

jelliot're only highlighting one. And not everyone will find that the most reasonable one to highlight.

One of those other possibilities - like I've already raised - they called 402 selected people in the Atlanta area, and 28 people who were located somewhere else in the US.

And all 430 were selected to be uniform in demographics and political inclinations.

As if that's hard to do.

Why on earth would they call 402 selected people in the Atlanta area, 28 people somewhere else, and then report the results that way? For that matter, if they are faking a national poll -- which, make no mistake, is what you are accusing them of doing -- why conduct any calls at all? Makes no sense.

Moreover, the MOEs on their face demonstrate that most of the respondents weren't from the South. The only reason we're having this discussion is that the diarist either didn't see or didn't know how to interpret the MOEs. Fair enough.

          •  why on earth do folks wanna get the answers... (0+ / 0-)

...that they want to hear and the answers that they wanna promote?

I dunno, different reasons for different folks, I guess.
