I don't understand why Obama hates debating so much. It's like he doesn't like having to defend his beliefs, because it's annoying or beneath him. That comes across as peevish, arrogant and lazy. Sure, we on the left know that his policies are better than Romney's, we know why, and we don't need it explained to us by Obama. But swing voters, who are low information, don't, and need to have it explained to them. That's his JOB, as candidate, even if he doesn't like doing it or feels that it's beneath him. Nonsense. Suck it up and swat that fly, Obama.

    •  I stand by my conjectures about his mindset (0+ / 0-)

I am absolutely convinced that he believes himself to be better than most people intellecutally and thus above having to defend his beliefs, which he views as self-evidently superior. I've gone to good schools too and know the type. I may have been guilty of this myself from time to time, in fact. But it's incompatible with strong and effective leadership, be it in office or in a campaign.

In any case, whatever the reasons, he's got to be a better debator.

      •  It's the same thing we saw in Kerry. Doesn't... (0+ / 0-)

want to get down in the muck. The President himself admitted this was one of his biggest faults in the first term. It's one of the only things I still appreciate about Bill Clinton. He loved politics. He enjoyed playing the game. He utilized his self confidence to more aggressively combate the lies of his opponents instead of using it to convince himself that he didn't need to. The President appears to imagine his ideas alone will combat bad arguments and lies. Which a politician as adept as he is should know is nonsense.

I think he's smart enough to hire a campaign that excels at rapid response in a way that Kerry didn't. But he personally doesn't seem to enjoy engaging in any discussion where compromise isn't on the table.
