    •  empowering vs. disempowering: (7+ / 0-)

I don't like them as substitutes for landlines and regular computers in fixed locations, any more than I like sleeping bags as a substitute for beds in houses.

And I don't like the fact that they are used as tracking devices and spying devices on behalf of Big Brother: all of that was a wholly unnecessary and gratuitous intrusion.

But mobile devices intelligently used, can be an empowering technology.  Such as for election protection, helping catch drunk drivers and criminals, for news reporters in the field, for personal safety in sketchy neighborhoods, people who are constantly on the go and seldom at fixed locations, etc.

Away from home or office, bad audio and tiny cramped keyboards are more empowering than none.  At home or at a desk, they're disempowering compared to good audio and full-sized keyboards.

The key here is empowerment, and choosing technologies to suit their uses.

"Minus two votes for the Republican" equals "plus one vote for the Democrat." Arithmetic doesn't care about their feelings either!
