  •  So. . .the little guy? What about him? (0+ / 0-)

Despite his brash even noxious style, I have over many years found that Alan Simpson usually has something interesting to say.  The little guy?  What does he have to say?  Well, I imagine that sometimes he has something interesting to say, but my common sense tells me that is not very often. Archie Bunker, a little guy and a caricature, had nothing but cant and bigotry to say, and you might be surprised how accurate that portrait is.
Don't get me wrong: I am a liberal Democrat and middle class and I am all for a Trumanesque rallying effort by Democrats in this Autumn's election to get the middle class (which is after all the large mass of voters), activated and to the polls so that the truly vapid and dangerous Romney can be once-and-for-all canned and set on the shelf. Fie upon him and his ilk!
But at the same time you gotta pay some attention to the truth of what Sen. Simpson has to say.  I just wish he'd say it more in the style of the late Senator Henry Jackson (D), Washington:  "Sure I'm a liberal, but I'm not a damn fool!"

    •  The late Henry Jackson of Washington... (10+ / 0-)

...was fertilizer for the neoconservatives, a racist, rejected arms talks with the Soviets, fought for military hardware boondoggles, and generally fought for the kind of foreign policy that we finally got under Ronald Reagan and worse under George W. Bush. He was a mentor to Richard Perle. Dick Cheney, Donald Rumsfeld, Elliott Abrams and Jeane Kirpatrick all thought he was great.

His work on environmental issues do not make up for the rest.

Don't tell me what you believe, show me what you do and I will tell you what you believe.

imagine you are an outlier, but I do not think that is the case. Rather, I think many of my fellow Democrats take the 'liberal' positions they do because they think it unseemly to so blatantly hand all of the power over to our Betters. Nonetheless, if they had their way, we'd have a less accountable government run by whichever demagogue convinces elitists like themselves that they know best, that they have the correct 'merit' lacking in commoners, that they share the same insights otherwise found lacking amongst the rest of the proles.

I wish I could even say I find it surprising that so many members of the 'middle class' wish to sell out their own, but there's nothing new about the obsessive need to feel Better, despite being just like everyone else.

Which is to say, Alan Simpson and his ilk are not Better and neither are you. Their ranks are just as full of dolts and liars as you'd find in the general population. Their wealth and power give them no particular claim on Truth lacking in the mass of unwashed proles.

Their unique and worthy insights are just as few and far between as you'd find anywhere else. Nonsense groupthink and dressed-up selfishness occupies the same amount of space in their brains too. That they have good luck and won the gene lottery says only that and nothing else.

      •  2020 your remarks are to whom? (0+ / 0-)

Are you talking to me, 2020, because I don't recognize your fictionalized liberal that you disdain so bitterly.
Boy do you come down hard, and in this case, at least, before you look where you are landing. I am none of the things you describe, and my text on here in no way suggests that I am; so you just dump some canned standard extreme-left hogwash on me because I said something good about a Senator from long ago, indeed another time?  Don't paint me with that brush, because that ain't my color.
"Better" -- I did not say it and would not; so much of the above is knee-jerk reactionary b. s.  Whew!
Did I say Simpson's "ranks" (your term), have a special claim on Truth?  Did I?  Look again -- I did not. And would not.
I am gonna skedaddle outta here; your kind of reactionary, even neurotic response is most inappropriate; you almost sound like a right wing Republican in terms of your psychological processing. No thanks! I have often been warned that the KosBlog is "extreme fringe left wing," and looking at your reaction, I am beginning to believe it. Let me head back to the center.

        •  Feel free to clarify your remarks. (0+ / 0-)

Otherwise I'll stick with my original reading. You can't praise the claim that everyday people don't tend to have much to say, then expect anyone to believe you aren't distinguishing those people from folks like Mr Simpson who, you say, often have something interesting to offer. The juxtaposition is pretty clear. He's got interesting ideas on offer, while the rest of the masses generally don't. That's not a stretch from what you said.

You can either stand by what you said or correct the record. If your counter to any substantive response to your comment is simply gonna be to blow smoke like this, though, it might be a fine idea to skedaddle until you're ready for a conversation.
