You are absolutely right.  When his desire to do away with Big Bird sinks in, his "victory" is going to ring even more hollow.  If this really does touch a nerve with parents and fans alike (I was a Sesame Street viewer and fan in the early-1970s), regardless of party, I would not be surprised if he once again gets no bump out of this 1st debate.

I've gotten super weepy today looking at clips from Sesame Street from the early 70s when I was a todler. I ate my cereal in front of it every day. I powerfully love those muppets! They taught kindness and acceptance. They celebrated diversity. They also taught us to identify our feelings.
      My daughter loved/loves them, too.
I just posted this clip from Jim Henson's memorial of Big Bird singing, but I'll post it here also. Get ready to cry.

        Weeping madly.

I think what might be the worst thing about the Republicans and their standard-bearer, is how they seem determined to scrub from America all that is kind, gentle, generous, open-hearted, decent.

"My dear friends, your vote is precious, almost sacred. It is the most powerful nonviolent tool we have to create a more perfect union." ---Representative John Lewis
