    stenography thing is tricky. Yes, they are. Sometimes.

    But being a reporter (and not talking about BW here necessarily) requires getting access to Important People for quotes, interviews, backgrounders, connections to other sources. If a pol doesn't like what a journo writes (e.g., coming right out and saying So-and-so lied or whatever), s/he is off the campaign plane, cut off from sources, shorted out of pressers -- in general denied the raw materials needed to do one's job. And keep one's job.

    So it's something of a double-edged sword.

    The glitzy "star" reality-TV mentality that governs TV "news" only exacerbates an already bad problem. Much of the decline of US journalism, and consequent dumbing-down of the US population, can be laid directly at the foot of revocation of the Fairness Doctrine and Ronald Reagan.
