    -- of whom I am sometimes critical.  His reporting on the jobs numbers explains the difference in surveys quite clearly.  Why more reporters don't understand this basic fact is simply beyond me.

        but parrots, nonetheless. A reporter repeats and a recorder records. Both professions are attractive to instinct-driven people or creatures of habit -- people who like doing the same thing over and over again. And politicians are people who like saying the same thing over and over again -- a definite asset at a time when there was no electronic transmission and stump speeches had to be uniform, lest some whipper-snapper news person detected a difference and made a story out of it. :)
