Read about American electoral politics in the 19th Century sometime; street violence, absolutism, apocalypticism, and hyperpartisanism was par for the course back then.  The Depression and WWII brought the country together in more ways than we're usually aware of; building the technocratic center-left consensus that ironically has become the default America that everyone - left and right - assumes is what exists, whether they support it or oppose it.  The conservative resurgence that began with the Southern Strategy, kicked into high gear with Reagan, and culminated post-9/11 has likewise taken us back to the 19th Century in more ways than we're usually aware of.

Besides, this is how conservatives are all the time.  Another commenter mentioned Muslims rioting over cartoons - prickly tribal/aristocratic pride that's wounded by anything but total deference and which demands hysterical retaliation.

To those who say the New Deal didn't work: WWII was also government spending
