But I am also convinced that Obama staring at his podium most of the night, using the filler sound "uh" about 2.4 million times, and nodding soporifically while Romney took him to the woodshed was not part of the plan.  I assume these bad optics were a result of lack of preparation and, perhaps, exhaustion.   I think the optics contributed a great deal to the sense that it was a rout rather than just one candidate simply being more aggressive and "on" than the other.

      •  Fair enough. You know and I know that (0+ / 0-)

it was accomplished by bald-faced lying.  Nonetheless, the impression that the debate gave to the less-informed was, I'm sorry to say, that Obama was being taken to the woodshed.  And, again, I say that I'm pretty sure that that was not part of the strategy.  So I agree that the strategy was as you said and that it was a basically sound strategy.  However, I maintain that Obama's execution of the strategy was greatly wanting and that, because of this, it appeared that he received a shellacking.  And in a televised presidential debate, appearances count for quite a lot, unfortunately.
