  •  Why are nursing homes seeming so profitable? (16+ / 0-)

Don't they get all their money from Medicare and Medicaid? Is it because they get a portion of the resident's Social Security? Is it the potential for double and triple billing?

I must say in defense of the one particular nursing home my late mother in law lived her final years, I wish they ran more like that one. My MiL died last year. She used to live at a nursing home that was about an hour away but often because of traffic the trip  took two hours each way.

My wife researched nursing homes and found one in our town, just five minutes away. We visited it and while the physical appearance of the facility was old, it was because the home had put the money towards the staff. I was amazed how many of the staff had worked there for 10, 15, or even 20 years. Continuity is good in that environment. It seemed like they were putting their residents first ahead of profit. Don't get me wrong, they still made money but they didn't feel the need to squeeze every last dollar and then some out of every resident.
