that millions are watching and this is how they get their 'news'. It's not about the diarist's interaction with the TV it's about what ABC is choosing to broadcast

    •  Exactly! (4+ / 0-)

I wouldn't own a TV if it wasn't for my husband. But since it's here, and because I'm a political junkie, I have to follow what's being put out there. Some of my friends/relatives actually look to me to sift out the truth for them.

The slant reached critical mass in my brain this week.

    •  Right - I don't like what YOU watch!!! (2+ / 0-)

I think you are exactly correct.  The author can always turn off the TV, but what is really upsetting is the thought that OTHER people (dumb people, people who are not as smart or as politically savvy as me) are watching crap on TV!!

Which is exactly why all those conservative busybodies are complaining about the liberal media!!!  The same reason conservatives want to ban books or outlaw sex in the movies.  The same reason why conservatives want to forbid sex education in schools.

The thinking is always: I know I will never be tainted by the crap in the media, but I am concerned that OTHER people will get duped, fooled, brainwashed, turned gay, vote the wrong way, become a crack addict, what-have-you.

Think about it: ABC will ONLY broadcast what is profitable for ABC to broadcast.  By turning off the set, you are making that sort of programming less profitable for ABC.

      •  IT'S NOT ABOUT WHAT SOMEONE CHOOSES (0+ / 0-)

to watch it's about what ABC chooses to broadcast. I don't understand why it's so difficult to get that distinction. The 'news' programs are the fourth estate and used to have a responsiblity to inform until they were subsumed into the entertainment division. Yes it's about ratings. THAT'S THE POINT. Journalism decisions should not be ratings based. The journalism profession used to have a responsibility to inform us.
