  •  I couldn't let this go by ... (8+ / 0-)

During the Bush v. Gore ordeal in late 2000, a real historian posted an article in Slate on the Republican claim that Nixon had graciously yielded a questionable election to JFK for the sake of comity and thus Gore should do the same. In fact, the historian said, in 1960 the Republicans left no stone unturned to find Democratic electoral misconduct but only found clear irregularities in Chicago, which however were balanced by Republican misdeeds in right-wing Southern Illinois for which the Democrats had proof. Given that, Everett Dirksen told Nixon there was nothing the party could do and he had to accept the loss. Nixon had in fact wanted to contest the election openly and bitterly, but Eisenhower told him the party would disown him if he did so but would throw the whole Republican machinery behind him on the quiet. So for 6 weeks between election day and the electoral college confirmation, every Republican governor and mayor and district attorney did everything possible, including convening grand juries, to find clinching evidence that the Democrats had really lost and instead came up with a wash. So both ideas - that the Democrats effectively won by cheating and that Nixon was a magnanimous patriot who freely yielded for the sake of the country - are just urban myths that people like to believe for whatever reasons of their own.

    •  Kennedy won 303-219 (0+ / 0-)

303 electoral votes to 219 for Nixon. There just wasn't ANY way the GOP could manage to flip 85+ electoral votes.

      It was SO not close.

      Not your choice
      And it's
      None of your damn business!
