Are there any theories explaining the wide disparity with the Presidential results and the downballot races in 1984, considering the fact that Reagan did have very substantial coattails in 1980? If it were an environment similar to today, I would guess that the explanation would be "Democrat fundraisers knew that Mondale had no chance, so they spent tons of money on downballot races", but I don't know if this is backed by any evidence.

(Mainly, I have a slight worry that this could happen again this year with Obama winning with few coattails.)

Senate candidates, particularly, are running ahead of Obama except for True Blue locks.

Baldwin tends to be close to the top of the ticket, but Warren is often 8 or more points behind Obama due to Scott Brown's strength and Warren's liberalism. Also Chris Murphy tends to run well behind Obama, and he isn't a lock.

          name recognition.

If he didn't have to pander to the John Birch Society, a.k.a. Tea Party, he'd likely be winning.

Baldwin is running a damn smart race. Her name recognition problem has eased, so there's a chance she'll pull it out.

in decent shape and this usually leads to a pro-incumbent election.
