      There's nothing all that special about the information they offer per se, it's widely available to anyone and more or less always has been.

        as you move down the ladder for colleges, you get taught older less-up-to-date material.

        The frosh/soph courses can be close to O.K.

        Upper division varies all over the lot. Standard curricula exist, but a course at MIT will cover three times the material of a course at a satellite state-system school. The extra material is state-of-the-art.

        That's why the grads do so much better on GREs.

        Btw: honors programs at the Land Grants are every bit as good as going to Ivy.

          based on your brilliant description:

          That totally rings true for me - I went to a third rate college and they still had textbooks for Organic Chemistry dating back to before carbon was invented.   Needless to say, after I graduated from their* and emerged into the "real world" I was in for a BIG shock . . .

          * there English department wasn't that great, either!!!
