Marabout - I believe that NY State funds a low spay-neuter cost as well.  With the first pootie back in the house after decades (and yes this was an FIV+ kitten) the cost to me was ONLY $25.  Because I adopted her from a rescue org, I simply had to submit the this form they gave me - the vet's billing office took care of all the rest.

You have to realize though, spaying will require that she have a place to stay for at least a week... to make sure that her surgery heals.

Reach out to a rescue org - see if something can be worked out.  Explain your situation.  If she is a human friendly cat (and there are ferals that can be human friendly - especially if their first association is good and it probably is usually food-driven) it makes it easier for them for placement.  If you can, check pet stores to see if they have a name of any local org (they will usually come in for large food purchases). there are many good smaller operations out there (as opposed to solely local or state funded animal rescues).

An old co-worker of mine has fed a number of feral cats in her Brooklyn neighborhood.  Two sisters made their way into their house.  Both could be petted, held, and they learned to play with toys.  They loved a good bed to sleep on.  These were not strays, but feral kittens that soon found that there was always a ready open dish of food on their porch.  Contrary to some of their siblings, these two somehow just seemed to taking to human affection.  Their momma was NEVER tameable, though... and she soon stayed at another neighbors to feed, leaving her kittens to eat on my co-worker's porch.

You have a good and warm heart wanting to help this little one.  I know how you feel with winter coming.

I was told I need to be on welfare and will need my award letter. I recently applied and am on a 45-day waiting period.

      •  if affiliated with a rescue org... (0+ / 0-)

I believe NY state has it worked out for low-cost spay/neuter... this is to encourage everyone to spay/neuter their new pets.

It will always cost more if you buy from a breeder or a private source - then the cost of spaying and neutering is all on the new owner!  I guess they figure if you can purchase a special breed, you can absorb the medical care cost, too.

Thankfully, with the exception of one (found Kitten that I took in), all of mine were low or no-cost (job already done).  But with the found Kitten - even then, the cost of neutering was not too bad, but luckily I was in a place to be able to handle things financially.

Just keep pushing forward and stay positive!!  I know you've been on a hard road of late, but I'm sure you will persevere.  :)
