    I live in the rural South.  A lot of the crude, overt racism is certainly gone, or at least not displayed openly.  I do, however, still see a lot of "we're losing the country" anger from conservative white males.  It's not like it was in the past, it's just displayed in more subtle ways at times i.e. complaining about people on food stamps, welfare, that kind of stuff.

      ...but I think a lot of the "we're losing the country" is more about losing the country to liberalism, because I heard a lot of that exact same stuff when Clinton was president.  

      There are a few who are wigged out that there's a black president, but I think a lot of them would be proud of it if he was a Republican black president.   I know a lot of Republicans who are really proud of the few black political figures they do have -- Condoleeza Rice, Colin Powell, etc.

      There are a faction who are still flat-out racist, though... but, they tend to embarrass the rest more than be embraced.
