There are some blue areas, but I don't think we can even call it purple. Not one statewide office. No Democratic Senator since Bentsen. I like Sadler, but with a month to go the best he can do is get some face time out there and hope for another round. I thought Bill White stood a chance. I can read the demographics and then I hear from Latino friends just how hard it is to get them out for a vote. The younger generation is a mixed bag. Most of the truly hardcore racists I know are younger ones. The old school institutional racists are everywhere. But, there are a whole heap of us that actually use the brains God gave us and who also do not hate on people. There is a chance, there ought to be something better.

Sure, I want it to change. I was even a County Chair out there in that sea of red in West Texas. I give money now and help when I can. I keep being told that due to demographics, ie. the Latino population growing, that eventually Texas will turn blue. Show me. Show me a Latino candidate that inspires them and me. Tony Gonzalez had the money. He was a lackluster candidate. As Molly Ivins said of Obama back when he first came to our political consciousness as the keynote speaker, "He is the only one up there with some Elvis in him." Like it or not, when you are trying to get something going, you need some kind of spark to get people fired up. Maybe Sadler has it. Maybe somebody I don't even know has it. But so far I have seen nothing and I am earnestly looking, to put legs to the hope that one day in my lifetime Texas will once again be blue.
