  •  Obama said the following quote: (2+ / 0-)

"I suspect that on Social Security, we've got a somewhat similar position.  Social Security is structurally sound. It's going to have to be tweaked the way it was by Ronald Reagan."

This was the quote we were all so bothered by.

    •  Reagan and O'Neill tweaked it; didn't change it. (2+ / 0-)

They raised the percentage paid in, incrementally raised the cap, and incrementally raised the retirement age. The highest age is 67, if you were born in 1960 or after.

but I want to talk about the values behind Social Security and Medicare and then talk about Medicare, because that’s the big driver - of our deficits right now.
I doubt Obama is interested in changes to Social Security because there is plenty of money to cover beneficiaries for many years. Like he said, Medicare is the problem, as is all health care in the country. Its costs are rising several times faster than anything else. To me, the only thing concerning about "I suspect that on Social Security, we've got a somewhat similar position" is that it let Romney off the hook.

Give me a break - tweaks are changes.   Raising the age is a cut.   Eliminating or capping the CPI is a cut.   The grand bargain was a cut.   No Republican is going to accept anything that isn't a cut.

Neither Social Security or I trashed the hotel room, and we're not paying for it.  Not me, not my kids, not my grandkids.     If they need to fix the deficit, let them pass a WS transaction tax, raise taxes on billionaires, raise taxes on me, cut defense,  stop waging wars and bailing out Wall Street. I don't care how they raise the revenue as long as they keep their mitts off one of the two programs that differentiate this country from Somalia.   OK, exaggeration but you get my drift.

If money is speech, then speech must be money. Call your mortgage company and pay your rent now.

        •  Social Security has nothing to do with the (0+ / 0-)

deficit. It is self-sustaining. The Repukes don't like Social Security and want to privatize it, which is why it always gets thrown into the conversation. We have to make sure that whatever is done to Social Security is to bolster it, if necessary.
