The religious right is armed to the teeth and fully convinced that they have every right to use aggressive force in their chosen role as God's army.

The only way to deal with an adversary like that, is to demonstrate that one has sufficient power to inflict unacceptable losses on them in the event they attempt any aggressive moves.

Ordinarily we seek to do that with electoral majorities of such numbers as to drive the extremists into a retreat position where they exit politics to instead preoccupy themselves with "the next world."  That, and with strong law enforcement to make clear that if the extremists attempt any physically aggressive moves, they will be caught quickly, prosecuted, convicted, and sentenced to long prison terms.

That said, the fact that the extremists have substantial power in many parts of the US calls into question whether it will be possible to overpower them at the ballot box in those areas.  Thus it's a smart move for progressives to maintain strong and practical support for the 2nd Amendment, to demonstrate sufficient capability and will to defend ourselves from any aggression on the part of extremists.  The capability plus the will, add up to the deterrent strength that keeps the peace.

"Minus two votes for the Republican" equals "plus one vote for the Democrat." Arithmetic doesn't care about their feelings either!
