  •  I thought Chai Tea would be an irreplaceable (3+ / 0-)

    ingredient, absolutely key to the success of the recipe, like chocolate or cocoa for a chocolate cake. I'm really surprised there is a substitute, even a preferable one.

      cardamom too, as there is a lot of spice in the CC tea bags already.

      I haven't tried it, I was only suggesting you can substitute one tea flavor for another without changing anything major about the chemistry of it. And with different tea bags, you can still brew them in the milk, but since the milk has to cool anyway, taste test it until you like it, then remove, as 5 minutes may or may not be long enough to develop a different tea.

      but could be substituted with small amounts of the dry spices, especially cardamom, fenugreek, and star anise.   Constant comment has no cardamom, though though cinnamon would go, and a strong citrus flavor which to me would detract.
