once took a teaser trip to St John, USVI.  4 day/5 nights for something like $700.  Catch was that we had to go through a sales presentation for a timeshare.  Came with the usual promises of no pressure, limited time commitment etc.  We had young kids at the time and the kids were shuffled off to a kid's club for the time we had to take for the presentation.

And we got exactly that.  A relatively short (although I think they went over the time they stated) pressure free (it really was as incredible as that sounds) introduction to some very nice condos.  The prices weren't bad - although more than I was comfortable paying.  At the end of our time we said, "No thanks." and we were off.  It was truly a pleasant experience and we received a very nice vacation to boot.

I think the major difference is that the time share was with a reputable hotel/resort chain (Westin).  I got the sense that while they wanted to sell us a condo time share they were just as happy to expose us to their resort and to a pleasant experience knowing that a positive experience would make us more likely to stay at a Westin in the future.
