Once the Union forces slipped past the Petersburg line and broke the Confederate rail line to the West, Lee's Army of Northern Virginia pulled out of the defenses and started its withdrawal into the interior in a full-scale retreat with only a few weeks left for the Confederacy.  The Confederacy was whipped at that point, all the really bad decisions having been made prior to the retreat with one good one incapable of correcting the stupidity already displayed.

Once anyone understands that only two real differences existed between the Confederate constitution and the original.  One, the Confederate presidency was limited to a single 6-year term rather than the then-undefined allowance for the Union President.  Two, slavery was allowed with very detailed provisions.  So, yeah, I guess a secesh could argue that they did go to war over term limits rather than slavery, but the mockery would be devastating.
