Believe it or not, I was asked in the interview for my first post-dissertation teaching job how, if all three of my degrees are from private universities, I thought I could teach students at a Cal State in an understanding manner. I said that at least I knew what standards I had been held to and it wouldn't hurt if my students were held to the same standard.  It worked!

    •  We have real problems with that (8+ / 0-)

in some departments at our university.  Some departments (Mat in particular) have such an inferiority complex, or think so little of their students, that they eschew interviewing faculty candidates with degrees or experience from big-name universities.

My point of view is that, if you don't have entrance standards, then you damned well better have exit standards, and if students can't meet those standards, then they need to change their plans.

And then there are the departments who tend to hire their own exclusively.  Way too incestuous.
