Too many people forget about local races in off years.  I always tell friends how much more important it is to focus on local elections because in most cases the local governments are really the ones who impact your everyday life.  I know so many people who are fed up with our town government, but nobody votes or runs against the entrenched powers.  Things have been a in a free fall here for years, but people only get active about who is going to be President.  Shameful.

      I'm trying to think...

I know that elections for County Council happen every four years in odd-numbered years immediately following Presidential elections.  There are also elections in the odd-numbered years following the mid-terms, but I can't even tell you what they're for.  It's hard enough keeping students focussed on the big elections.  Trying to get them to vote in elections for small, local offices, and on potentially arcane, local initiatives are on the ballot requires perseverance beyond what I'm capable of.  But, of course, often the local elections can have the most important results.  For example, there's the tale of what happened in my county district at the last election for County Coucil.
