  •  And soap. (4+ / 0-)

But I can clean a house with vinegar and baking soda which is good since I have so many allergies toxic cleaning products are too risky.

And the costs of doing laundry. Being able to wash ones clothes in a machine is a luxury much of the world does not have. Including here in the US.

    •  yep at one time certain tinned beef was banned (2+ / 0-)

because the beef was from Argentina and at that time, any meat products had to be produced in the US.  Another headache for the checker who had to be sure that each item bought was kosher, so to speak.

The merchants were the ones who benefited as they sent out people each month to purchase food stamps for 25 cents on the dollar and food stamps became a de facto currency for purchasing items that were off the list.  Heck I can remember bootleggers who used to take foodstamps

        •  actually the one I had in mind ran a small country (3+ / 0-)

store with outdated tins and such bought at auction and scavenged from behind grocery stores and the landfill.  Her real business was selling moonshine from under the counter and beer on Sundays (blue law state).  I remember her shelves of dusty merchandise.
One day, a person tried to buy something from off the shelf and she refused him saying "If I sold you that then I would have to go out and find another one.  That would not be good business"

Her refusal to sell anything from off the shelf led to her being busted
