    underclass. I.e. the bottom 30-50%. Many of them will understandably seek ways to emotionally compensate for their lesser status, and many of them will come up with and fall back on shortcuts such as CTs, denialism, religion, guns, racism, etc. (which is why Obama was spot-on in that much-maligned 2008 speech, however politically inadvisable). Add to this people traumatized, confused and angered by cultural, social and economic upheaval, and you have the makings of a very large group of unhappy people eager to cling to any available lifeboat. And there will always be political snake oil salesman eager to take advantage of them by playing these up to them. Thus today's GOP base and leadership:

    White racists upset that being white is no longer as advantageous as it once was.

    Working class people who find that well-paying jobs are hard to come by.

    Religious conservatives upset with gay rights, abortion, secularism, etc.

    Militant patriots upset that US power abroad appears to be slipping.
