    IMO one of the biggest factors in the political changes around same-sex marriage and anti-discrimination provisions (health insurance, whatever) has been older straight people whose kids have come out. When it's your own kid, it's harder to blame an abusive upbringing or brainwashing or whatever. And the most common response seems to be "He/she is my kid and I love them no matter what and oh, BTW, if this other person is loving and caring for my kid, they must be pretty cool too so let's invite them both for thanksgiving." I've watched this repeatedly over the past 30 years and it's huge.

    Then those parents-of-gays are judges, legislators, sitting in decision-making bodies in the Episcopal Church or Presbyterians or wherever, or in HR departments. And things change.
