  •  That's so funny, I was thinking about serendipity (22+ / 0-)

this morning and thought about pitching a story on it for a magazine or blog.

My favorite serendipity story spans a decade.  As a senior in college, I got very sick and was hospitalized for several months.  It seemed like the worst thing in the world at the time.  Instead of graduating that June, I had to return in the fall for a semester.  Well, that semester, I met a freshman, and started dating him.  We broke up after a year but stayed good friends.  8 years later, he was in medical school and mentioned that he had met a classmate that he and his parents thought was perfect for me.  At our wedding, my ex-boyfriend was the best man.

Another is about my job.  There's a blog I read that does an annual fundraising contest for an educational charity.  I love their mission and have given them a fair amount of money.  One day I got a call from their regional coordinator saying she was visiting my city and wanted to meet with big donors. I'd been laid off work so, hoping for a job possibility with the non profit, met her for coffee.  We talked about a lot of stuff, and in passing she mentioned that she knew of a job opening in a field I had some experience - but little interest - in.  I brushed it off and forgot about it.  From her hotel that night, she didn't follow up on anything else, but did send me that listing.  I resisted for a while but finally called.  Five years later, I am the Chief Operating Office of the company, one of its leading consultants, and have never been so happy professionally.  It has also transformed me as a person, giving me confidence and creativity, which I lacked before.  While letting me work from home and be there for my kids.

    Those are my big two!
