While I had always figured that Romney could basically only gain from the debate (unless he really screwed up), I did not expect the blowout that it was. I had 2 of my friends, very strong Obama supporters, tell me either during the debate or immediately following that it didn't seem like he even wanted to be president any more, but that they were obviously still going to vote against Republican insanity (though not really FOR Obama like they did in 2008).

This wasn't in response to seeing the snap polls or the post-media coverage.. that's how they felt right when they saw it.

I think, if anything, in some ways the base did Obama a favor by basically conceding that Obama had a bad night rather than trying to defend the pile of crap that it was. Instead we were able to sort of transition into some other attacks on Romney. Let's put it this way.. would you rather us be trying to shift the narrative into some Romney attacks or still trying to defend a bad debate that everyone knows he did poorly in?

    •  But the base did neither. Just freaked out. And no (5+ / 0-)

it was not a 'blowout'. That's the whole point that the recent polls are proving, it wasn't a blowout - but Dems who ridiculously came to conclusions like 'it doesn't even seem like he wants to be President anymore' (I can't even believe someone could actually think much less believe that), fed the narrative out of proportion. You don't have to defend the debate, just move on like Obama did. HE transitioned to Romney attacks, not the base. The base is handwringing over every poll, even RAS was getting love here. We did not do him any favors. None.
