If you only use one browser on one computer, you won't seen a change in how the {new} label works, as far as I understand it.

But if you switch between Firefox and Chrome on your computer, or between your laptop and a tablet, the site will no longer 'remember' which comments you have already read (or at least had possibly read as you had the diary open after the comment was made).

So, for example, say I read this diary on my tablet when I woke up in the middle of the night ~ a common occurrence for me, so I generally have the tablet by the bed and read myself back to sleep. (Not great, according to sleep experts, but better for me than turning a light on to read a book or moving to the living room....) Before the change, when I opened the same diary on my laptop as I enjoy my morning tea, {new} appeared next to only those comments posted after I closed the diary on the tablet. This morning, on the laptop, all the comments are still marked as {new}, as the information about which ones I'd seen/read already is now stored on my Kindle and not on DKos's browser.

In case it's not clear, I'm pretty sure I'm not going to like this change :-(

I occasionally log in using a different computer but even then I'm not usually concerned with new comments. My main concern is with "Recent Replies" to my own comments. I don't want to toss a comment into the conversation and not at least make the effort to read any replies that someone was thoughtful enough to make.

I appreciate the [new] comments label more when I have a more active role in the authorship of the diary itself. But, yeah, sometimes I will go back into an open thread diary or something and look for new comments. Thanks for taking the time to explain. I can see how the new system will take a lot of the burden off of the DK servers.

I kinda wonder though, if I dump my cache will this little orange world become brand-spankin' [new] for me again?
