  •  Their fantasy? Yes. Likelihood--not at this time (0+ / 0-)

The assumption that military personnel would side with *THAT is really genuinely insulting.

Why do you think so many people join the military? They want a higher education and training they could not otherwise afford.

That sounds like a bunch of crazed, jackbooted book burners to me [note snark].

I think you underestimate a lot of Americans.

because, well, you know, prying eyes...

Politicians fear the far right because they're afraid of what a few lone wolves (like McVeigh & co.) might do if they get riled up. They're right to be. Those people are scary. And dangerous.

But there will never be a coup in this country: because then they'd have to deal with the rest of us. You know, the people who build the planes, and the bombs, and all the other awful weapons of war that make the authoritarians feel so safe -- not to mention light the streets at night, run the telecommunications system, stock the shelves with food, the racks with clothing, and keep their precious GPS satellites flying. Atlas Shrugged was juvenile fiction, but this is the real world where at the end of the day the 1% are helpless without a willing 99%. I think enough of those who would have to actually prosecute a takeover know all this, and they're not going to chance losing the little they have.
