the "Father Of Our Country" !!

Thanks for this one, and a good suggestion for a nice read this winter.

I'd much rather know the truth about our history, warts and all, than some  smarmy shite that bears no relation to what really happened.  Gear the truth to the age of the student, but bygawdandhenry, tell the truth and shame the divil!

    I feel better, now. ;-)

We cannot call ourselves a civilised society if we refuse to protect the weakest among us.

    •  Actually, the truth about Washington (1+ / 0-)

      doesn't need any burnishing.

He has tremendous integrity. He once accidently opened a letter from a subordinate to a arrogant I-could-do-better general under his command that described him, Washington, as unfit for his position. He resealed the letter, gave it to the subordinate and apologized for having opened it....and took no action against either man.

The general in question was later captured by the British, having stoppd for a hearty meal, a night of drinking and a good night's sleep.  When the Brits grabbed him, he was attired in a nightshirt and a dressing gown. He was one of the few generals Washington had who had a military background and the Brits thought they'd won the war when the got their hands on him....actually, since he was constantly trying to undermine Washington, it was the best thing they could have done to help him!

Freedom has two enemies: Those who want to control everyone around them...and those who feel no need to control themselves.

      •  The true stories, as you say, are enough (0+ / 0-)

        to keep his reputation intact.

What I object to is the fantasy stuff, that actually detracts from his story.   After enough of those cherry tree fairy tales, is it any wonder that kids begin to doubt all, or most, of the history?

I'm not in favour of lying to kids.  As one of my mentors said, "If you're old enough to ask the question, you're old enough to hear the answer."  The caveat, always, is to make the answer age appropriate.

As your comments above prove, the real information about George Washington is so much more interesting than any of the myths we were taught.

Thank you for the extra information.  This was one story that I either had not heard, or did not remember.
