    thought of South Dakota as being in the Midwest - it's a Plains state with a very different culture.  It'd be like calling Colorado the midwest, imho.

    Having said that, Ohio below about Akron or so is a deeply racist place.  But while Ohio is at least somewhat diverse, religiously, I have the impression that the Plains states are both racist and Evangelical.  And the Midwest is still at least growing in diversity; Columbus has a huge Somali expat population, Michigan and Minnesota have large Muslim populations, both American-grown Black Muslims as well as a lot of immigrants.  It's not New York but I've always had the impression that the Plains states were uniquely homogeneous compared to even the surrounding states, although I imagine that at least the lower Plains states, where agriculture is still predominant, now have a corresponding Hispanic population?
