  •  People Don't Get That The Debates Are A CONTINUUM (9+ / 0-)

You do of course and so does Obama.

While I don't think he anticipated that he would get the reviews that he did (and frankly they were hyberbolic, he didn't do as badly as has been portrayed), or that he planned to be panned. But I do think he went into the first debate with a specific, long term strategy in mind. He went in a with a plan that encompassed ALL the debates as pieces of the larger continuum of the end game part of the campaign. He had a plan and stuck to it and part of it was to not be too aggressive, but as you point out to evaluate, make notes, get things on record and set the table for going forward through the final weeks of the campaign.

He did what he needed to do in the first debate, and his performance was deliberately subdued. Could he have done better? Sure, in hindsight he could have been a bit more aggressive, but I do belive you have the right of it.

The first debate set up the whole dynamic we're seeing now and the Biden debate was absolutely considered part of the whole piece and Biden played his role masterfully.

Thanks for reposting as it's own diary, it's a terrific piece!

    •  Biden's attack dog role (5+ / 0-)

I think President Obama's part I was partly meant to bait the media into more thorough coverage of the VP debate.  Obama's performance made the networks blood thirsty for the next drop of a downward spiral and so the media turned to Biden.  Obama's part I indirectly magnified the Biden debate.  The country was drawn into the race at the most timely of times.  Ryan's plan for America is on paper yet Ryan and Romney have somehow been able to distance their party from its radical agenda.  The media has been complacent and enabled the two of them to attempt to serve the people without detailing how they plan to serve.

Team Obama put the spotlight on this debate or better, they lured the media into hyping it to the point where it became probably the most anticipated VP debate all-time after Palin-Biden in 2008 of course.

Vouchercare, gutting Medicaid, social security, unemployment comp and food stamps - liquidating our support services in order to enrich the already rich.

America got to see Ryan under the microscope and we got to see a clear contrast between the Democrats and Republican plans for this country.  Now that the contrast has been set, Obama's free to color in the big picture differences.

watched more now that Obama is the underdog. And the VP debate too probably garnered more attention as a result of the overhype of Obama's "defeat".
