But most Republicans sincerely do believe the fiscal austerity plan is the only way to go.

    •  not necessarily because they think it will work (9+ / 0-)

Not all Republicans have an evil plan of impoverishing the country in order to rake in the dough while driving scared and desperate people into a frenzy of right-wing lunacy a la Weimar Germany -  but they are 100% committed to austerity as a matter of principle.

It almost doesn't matter if it will work or not; it's "the right thing to do".  They simply believe that it will work because Mammon will smile upon it.  Even if the result is horrible suffering, it's justified on abstract intellectual and moral grounds.  Pure blessed capitalism does not spare the rod for people who refuse to be maximally profitable.  In the absence of an alternative means of support, the unemployed will be left with no choice but to pull jobs out of their asses.  Hell, to hear Republicans say it, that's where jobs come from; "entrepreneurs" just have (read: are) bigger assholes so they can more easily pull more and better jobs out of them.  We'll all have to do an honest day's work, even if it's picking fruit or digging ditches for 12 hours 7 days a week in the hot sun for minimum wage and no benefits.

If anything, they're counting on the desperation to magically fix the economy: "You're damn right no-one wants to pick fruit!  But if they have to, then only a fool or a moron won't find some way to make it easier for himself ... which means greater efficiency!  Hallelujah!  And only an unambitious lump won't find a way to get himself a better job!  Praise Supply-Side Jesus for he has dee-livered me!"

They really think we have to go through hell because in their fever dreams the dynamic entrepreneurial utopia is on the other side, past the crucible where the sloth and dependency carefully and cynically nurtured by "librul biggubmint" gets burned out of us by hunger and so on.

To those who say the New Deal didn't work: WWII was also government spending
