  •  I have a question (7+ / 0-)

We heard Ryan say again last night that we shouldn't increase taxes on the rich because even if we raised the tax rate to 100%, it would only pay for the government to run for 90 days, so what's the point?

Wasn't he basically admitting that the way he plans to close the deficit is to increase the tax burdens on middle income and lower income people?  "Broaden the base" -- what else does it mean, but broadening the base of the 99%'s income more than you lower their tax rates, if he's already said that you can't avoid a deficit without basically confiscating ALL of the 1%'c income?

    Am I missing something here?

    •  I don't think so (11+ / 0-)

Basically what Ryan said is that we can NEVER raise enough money to fund the govt. EVER.

That is patently FALSE. And stupid on its face.

Do we need to streamline govt? Definitely. Do some areas need to be cut? For sure. Do we need to rethink some of the ways our military spends money? Of course. Will some programs be revised, deleted, restructured? Probably.

Do we need to revamp and rethink our tax code? Certainly. But if anything, we need to revamp it to put more of the burden on corporations, simplify things for individuals, and put in place some incentives to hire and invest HERE rather than overseas.

None of which are things the GOP seems remotely interested in.

This is the piece that I really don't get. The Romney-Ryan fantasies don't add up to enough money to offset their cuts enough to fund the current Federal budget. But on top of that, Romney wants to pretty much double the Pentagon budget -- which makes the hole much much bigger.

more people employed.  They never say how, of course.  And we all know trickle down does not work.  We just suffered the very real consequences of it.

R/R are like a scam investment pitch:  vague, non-specific, with promises of outsized returns.  Be very, very leary.
