    ...were based on Senator Claghorn, a character on Fred Allen's radio show "Allen's Alley".  

    The most famous...I say, the most famous parts of his speech patterns were also based on the senator.  Claghorn, that is.

      Eric, you'll be pleased to know that in my unsuccessful attempt to answer that question, the seventh Google hit was this strip!
