  •  I once saw an absolutely dreadful production (5+ / 0-)

of "Waiting for Godot."  The actors did what they could, but the direction was haphazard at the very best.  If one my good friends wasn't in it, I would have left at intermission.  As theatre is my main escape, it hurts to have suffer through bad versions of great plays.

    •  The problem here was not direction (4+ / 0-)

but the actors.  Some wavered in and out of British accents while others didn't even try.  One of the actresses was incapable of speaking her lines in anything other than a monotone, even though her character is in distress continuously through the play.  It didn't help that the audience wasn't getting many of the jokes either.  Ever feel like you've been transported to the land of the idiots?  Did I ever tell you I live in the and of the Republicans?

      •  Sounds depressing. (4+ / 0-)

I have definitely.  I went to a small college in Jacksonville, FL and our theatre department idiotically staged Neil Simon's "California Suite"  Not one night did the actors playing the couple from NY get consistent laughs no matter how well they performed it.  In fact, one night I was the only one who laughed and I was the sound engineer up in the sound booth, so they had no idea at least one person was laughing.

I know they staged because of the two slapstick scenes, but the department really hung those very talented actors out to dry by doing a scene that clearly no one attending the show would understand the comedy.
