Besides being a ripping yarn, it also drives home the point about why we must resume and expand space exploration: so no one event can wipe out humanity.

We don't even need the aliens that appear in their novel Footfall to be in peril.  Too many people think that we can blow up asteroids with nuclear weapons to understand that a gazillion tons of debris traveling as a loose conglomeration can be just as deadly as a solid mass.  NASA really needs to be researching alternative propulsion systems to the chemical designs we now use.

There were viciously racist themes in that story.

The Aryans preserve civilization while the Degenerate Negroes practice cannibalism, and only the use of poison gas warfare saves the Innocent Whites from the Marauding Blacks.

The lesson about the implications of a large-object impact is a useful one, but it would have made a far more interesting story if it hadn't devolved into a racist diatribe.

To my mind that sort of thing really breaks the flow: it pulls one's mind out of the story and up to the "meta" level, like the kind of writing where the author is constantly reminding the reader how clever he is, until it becomes just plain tedious.

"Minus two votes for the Republican" equals "plus one vote for the Democrat." Arithmetic doesn't care about their feelings either!
