I live less than a mile from my wife's parents. We walk to each others' houses to visit all the time.

Their street is always festooned with Halloween decorations and the trick-or-treaters canvas the block in droves.  My street? Not a peep. Not even when we put out the gothic candleabra and the watermelon-o-lanterns that glow blood red instead of orange.

The difference?  Can't say for sure, but my house is on a more heavily trafficked road and the houses are set farther back from the street. You have to go down a longer driveway to get to the house. Most of the time, the added privacy is a good thing, but the few times we actually would like to have random visitors, not so much.
