    •  I doubt the Obama team is doing that. (7+ / 0-)

They're pretty smart and Nate is the best in the business because he's data driven, period.  Obama's debate performance (with an able assist from the right leaning media) have pushed the race back into tossup territory for the first time since before the conventions.  Obama knows this.  That's why Biden went bare knuckled last night and didn't pull a single punch.

BTW, the latest from 538 regarding this tightening was available just before the VP debate.  Did the Dem team ignore it?  Hell no.

Presidential campaigns don't rely on the "dime store polls," as Charlie Cook calls the publicly released stuff.

And they don't rely on somebody else's algorithms.

        Be serious.

Repubs started up the car, hit the throttle and sent it over the cliff, and now they're complaining that the black guy hasn't fixed it fast enough.

Data analysis and modeling is just starting to get utilized in elections. It's been used in GOTV efforts, but the kind of stuff Nate is doing? OFA is just doing it this election cycle. Nate is ahead of the curve. Its the whole reason OFA brought him in to look at their internals in 2008. They may not be relying on someone else's algorithms, but they certainly aren't ignoring Nate's.

they're doing is going to pay very close attention to the guy who correctly called every senatorial race in the last cycle as well as 49 of the 50 states.

And of course everyone has their own statisticians, and Obama's are undoubtedly excellent.  But 538 takes as sophisticated and accurate a global look at political races as anyone on the planet.
