  •  Yes, it's about impressions (31+ / 0-)

The winner of these debates is so obviously a subjective matter that we ourselves judge who won based on what we think other people will think.

    It's a not a real debate, it's a stupid game show/ reality show.  But it's a game we've got to win.

Being in charge after the last debate is what counts.

have actually hurt American politics.  Debates were originally held so the public can compare and contrast the candidates for themselves.  Since then, it's become more about zingers, style, and spin than substance.  We're better off without them,.  Our system needs serious reform.  I can see why Woodrow Wilson preferred a parliamentary from of government and LBJ thought the president should have a single six-year term while congressmen were elected every four years.

time when Debates were necessary and more serious and about substance and candidates contrasting their positions.  It was a time for real debate about substantive issues. But now it is has become some reality show and style over substance.

I think in this age of the internet and technological advances and ads on TV constantly for months and months and candidates websites and blogs...I truly believe Presidential Debates have outgrown their usefulness. Now it is just all about style and like a talent show.

Now I do believe in debates for House and Senate Seats and for Governor as often people do need to find out more.

But there are other ways for Presidential candidates to communicate their views and for voters to compare, contrast, decide.

Having MSNBC on in the background from 7 am to 11 pm, it's been disturbing to hear so many talking heads frame this as some sort of sporting event. Andrea Mitchell specifically made a comment along the lines of "fun to watch".

Well, it may be "fun" for some, but for me it's agonizing, especially now that we've seen, after the first presidential debate, how woefully uninformed the electorate is and what a joke there criteria is for declaring the winner of a debate.

When bald-faced lying has become so accepted that bald-faced liars defend it as a legitimate tactic and Independent voters buy into the notion that calling out liars is petty and a failure to advance the conversation, then it's difficult to maintain hopefullness. If the truth just doesn't matter any more then we have to be better at lying than the GOP is or else we're fucked.

I think I'd rather move to a country with a saner electorate than jump on the lying liar bandwagon. Sorry for being defeatist in what is a great rally the troops diary.

plus for a very long while, I have wished for one six year term for the President.  That would make it so much better as then Presidents would not have to campaign and could just do their job.  And it would mean that we get a change every 6 years no matter what.

I doubt that will ever happen but that would be terrific.
