"preparing the ground" operation in their campaigns. They are waging war. What the media focus on the candidates disguises is that the war is being waged against the voters. Universal suffrage, which arrived in 1971, turned the electorate into the enemy of the traditional power elite, elected officials and their partisan operatives. That's why the formal party organizations are antagonistic towards grass-roots efforts, especially at the candidate selection level. That the people should actually select their own representatives is anathema and accounts for why even third parties have been ruled out of the process. Though the two major parties' approach is slightly different (Democrats prefer to avoid primaries; Republicans count on the chamber of commerce to forward a handful of clones), the object, to maintain control, is the same. And the reward for the pols is the feeling of power and a comfortable retirement for life. Which means they are all pro-life--their own.
