or have had to to comply with a court injunction to force my kids to go to high school against their, and their parents' will.  When we let our kids part company with school in their teens, and since they were both still auto-didacts (self learners), we let them direct their own education and their own broader development.  See details of my kids' unschoolng sagas if you are interested.

Since they followed their own informal social studies and language arts curriculum and did not choose to learn any formal science and math, should truant officers shown up at my door and forced me to cease and desist?  And if I had refused in what I thought was the best interest of my kids should I have been jailed or had my kids taken away?

I know I might be taking this argument to the extreme, but I think it is worth at least pursuing and discussing the extent of state power here.

You aren't a typical parent.  Nor are your kids typical.  I think what ManhattanMan is expressing is, there are too many families that could use home-schooling to rid themselves of the responsibility of educating their kids.  I've never known any homeschooling parent to be a shirker, though.

I'm probably the laziest I know, and I have a teaching degree. That's how I know the education system is not necessarily "all that".

If you starve the middle class, whose gonna pay for your crap?

what ManhatttanMan is talking about would put me on the wrong side of truant officers.  Those officers can't automatically know which parents are okay even if they are technically violating the law!
