if I could vote I would vote based on candidate not party, however I have a feeling that would still lead me to vote straight D when I am able to vote, still I feel I owe it to myself to look at everyone.

    •  I thought that way for years (1+ / 0-)

until I realized that I'd never, ever voted for a Republican, and that the Independents I'd supported had never won and, in the process, had split their support primarily from the Democrat (my second choice) and thrown the office to the Republican.

That realization ended my determination to vote for anyone but a Democrat. I suppose, if I had a race where a superb Republican (the likes of which I can't think of in more than 20 years) was running against a sleazeball of a Democrat, I would pull the lever for the better individual, but since I've never been faced with that challenge since my first election in 1978, I doubt it's going to keep me up at night.

On the other hand, I scrutinize primary candidates very, very carefully, and work for the ones I like who seem to need the help. (Sometimes they even win!)

Still, it never hurts to be thoughtful in exercising your vote, AT&B. I just found that, after years of being just that, I seem to be a died-in-the-wool Democrat after all.
